TRUE STORY OF THE EXORCISM OF EMILY ROSE

TRUE STORY OF THE EXORCISM OF EMILY ROSE:

Demons exist whether you believe in them or not.

The only ones who can say ‘yes’ to it are those who have experienced it firsthand. In a courtroom drama, the prosecution says that science can answer every question. While, the defense says the mysteries of God transcend science.

Scott Derrickson, co-writer (with Paul Harris Boardman) and director of Emily Rose, says the point of the film is not “to convince” or “to answer any metaphysical question” about demonic possession.

Terry Mattingly of Religion Column wrote, “He hoped to make believers hesitate about their beliefs and doubters question their doubts.” Derrickson added, “The research phase was horrible.” It’s great that I have so much knowledge about it. Furthermore, as a Christian, having that knowledge is crucial. “But I won’t do it again.”

TRAILER: THE EXORCISM OF EMILY ROSE

The movie moves through flashback scenes in a courtroom, in which Father Moore is on trial. An offer (pleading guilty and serving six years of a 12-year sentence) is made to him. However, he denies it, saying “I do not care about my reputation or fear of jail time. All I care about is telling Emily Rose’s story.”

His lawyer Erin Bruner is opposed to this, but she believes in his conviction. Her own belief in demons is nonexistent. As a churchgoer, Ethan Thomas presumably believes, but at times lawyers disagree with what they believe.

She may be led to believe what father Moore supports by her go-getter attitude and her nightmare experiences. Or, perhaps by her pursuit for a solution to her problems.

But who is Emily Rose?

TRUE STORY OF THE EXORCISM OF EMILY ROSE
Left to Right: Anneliese Michel and Emily Rose (Played by Jennifer Carpenter)

Jennifer Carpenter gives a breathtaking performance as Emily Rose (a college student who is devout and happy-go-lucky). In the beginning, she noticed strange occurrences around her. Like the faces of her friends and strangers turning into demonic snarls.

Despite her best efforts, she still has nightmares. She speaks several foreign languages. She cries for help and loses weight like anything. Father Moore, the parish priest, is contacted for assistance. Exorcisms are performed.

Despite having authority from the archdiocese, once he gets into this murder case the church authorities order him to accept a plea deal. And, avoid scandals to the church. Church officials are curiously hesitant about exorcism. According to church authorities, devils and devil-agents can operate in the world; there is a rite of exorcism, and there are also exorcists.

As opposed to this, it keeps the matter quiet and is reluctant to issue possession certifications or authorize exorcisms. It’s like those supporters of rationalist ideology where they want to shout science and logic but believes in black magic!

TRUE STORY OF THE EXORCISM OF EMILY ROSE:

It is chilling to know that whatever you are seeing in the movie has actually happened to someone in real life.

It is based on an actual event that happened in 1976. Anneliese Michel, a German girl who died during an exorcism. The doctors diagnosed her with epilepsy because of seizures and visions. Their bishop and her family believed she had been possessed by demons. As a result, the German authorities prosecuted the parents and priests (They were convicted but suspended their sentences).

She’ll speak in different languages, which led to the assumption that she was possessed by more than 13 demons. And, one of them was presumed to be Hitler. As the days passed, her condition deteriorates. First exorcist was performed on 24th September 1975. Eventually, she went under 67 Catholic exorcism between 1975-76 and died on 1st July 1976. She weighted on 30kgs at the time of her death.

And, it is hard to believe that a God loving person can be possessed by demons. But, this never let her faith in God weaken.

REVIEW:

Potential viewers should keep that sentiment in mind. A movie like this isn’t just for entertainment purposes. At times, it’s quite grim and dark. Nevertheless, it does not amount to exploitation.

A story of compassion and faith is woven throughout. In his quiet and selfless manner, Father Moore also inspires others. Resolute in his faith, he leads a life of service. Despite everything that happens to her, Emily never seems to lose faith in God.

This story does not address the issue of demon possession of Christians. During the courtroom scenes, there is an exposition about how religion and science relate. And, how religion and doubt coexist. (These two aspects are not necessarily in the conflict in either case.)

It strikes me how rare it is for cinema to display such acts of selflessness and faith. Emily Rose’s genre makes them truly unique. Moreover, in this movie’s case, it’s the genre it belongs to that makes it so new, unique, and different as most of them only deal with exorcisms.
