THE INTERN: A Calm, Polished and Smooth Nancy Meyers’ Story of a Young Boss and Senior Intern.
REVIEW OF THE MOVIE: THE INTERN
Ben Whittaker has retired after an extended and successful career and a widower. After travelling the globe post retirement, the boredom of getting nothing to try, to all day quickly sets in when he’s back home. Desirous to get busy in an office environment again, he finds employment with a web fashion outlet, founded by Jules (Hathaway), as a senior intern.
The characters that inhabit a Nancy Meyers (Something’s Gotta Give, the vacation, What Women Want etc) film are usually fairly well-off and seemingly, don’t have much to fret about aside from maybe, their love lives. For Meyers, it’s the type of tried-and-tested confection that plays it safe and sweet.
But what makes The Intern special is Robert De Niro’s presence. His humble and sophisticated gestures even in the smallest things are highlight of this. He brings a balance in the life of Jules. Anne Hathaway is just natural to her conflicting character, as she juggles between her startup company and family life, quite good. But it’s not something that the other actress in her league couldn’t have done equally well, if not better.
Movie Fact: The Indian Remake of The Intern is finalized and going to release in November 2021. The plan was to feature Deepika Padukone (as Jules) and Rishi Kapoor (as Ben). But the uncertain death of Rishi Kapoor ji, can delay the release.
